Hey everyone! I wanted to share a setup I’ve been working on to track devices across multiple rooms using OpenWRT and UBUS. My house has thick walls, so I set up a dumb Wi-Fi AP in each room to ensure good coverage, especially with 802.11ac. The goal was to track devices based on which AP they’re connected to, and it’s been working smoothly!
I’ve been using the host configuration variable to differentiate between devices on different APs, and it makes a lot of sense so far. I’d love to hear if anyone has alternative approaches or if there’s a better way to reference the specific router/AP a device is connected to—any insights would be super helpful!
On another note, I’ve been experimenting with automating my lights based on device presence. For instance, when my phone connects to the living room AP, the lights dim to a cozy 30% and switch to a warmer color. It’s been a fun way to create a more dynamic home environment. I’d love to hear how others are using device tracking for automation!
Thanks for all the support and ideas—this community is amazing! Cheers! ![]()
