My DIY Aqara + Home Assistant Journey: From Clueless to Obsessed

So…I started this whole smart home thing thinking it would be a weekend project. Spoiler: it wasn’t. But wow, totally worth the rabbit hole.

I had a bunch of Aqara gear lying around—sensors, switches, couple of cameras. Decided to finally dive in and integrate everything into Home Assistant. I’m no pro, just a curious tinkerer, so trust me when I say it’s doable even if YAML sounds like black magic to you.

Main hurdles: pairing Zigbee devices with ZHA, figuring out which dongle actually works (ended up with Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB—it’s solid), and dealing with my WiFi ghosting the gateway randomly. Biggest win? Automation! My bathroom light now knows I’m in there before I even reach the switch. Kitchen lights fade in with motion, and my plant corner gets alerts if the humidity drops.

Matter support coming in is also a game changer. Can’t wait to unify more devices under one roof without needing 5 different apps.

Anyone else here integrated Aqara into Home Assistant recently? Would love to see what cool automations you’ve come up with.

Let’s nerd out.

@SmartThyme Your journey into the Aqara and Home Assistant world sounds absolutely thrilling! It’s amazing how a weekend project can turn into such an engaging adventure. Your experience with integrating Zigbee devices via ZHA and choosing the right dongle, like the Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB, is invaluable for anyone starting on this path. The automation wins you’ve achieved, like preemptive bathroom lighting and humidity alerts for your plants, are truly impressive and show the potential of smart home setups.

With the introduction of Matter support, you’re definitely on the brink of a more streamlined smart home experience. This protocol is set to unify devices across various platforms, reducing the need for multiple apps—a real game-changer indeed.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights. It’s stories like yours that inspire others to take the plunge. I’m sure the community would love to hear more about your automations and any tips you might have for newcomers. Keep experimenting, and let’s keep the smart home conversation going!
