My Experience with Vera3 Firmware Update and Wunderground API

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with updating the Vera3 firmware. I’ve been a Vera3 user for quite some time and have always been cautious about firmware updates, especially after some past issues. However, the latest update to firmware 730 seemed promising, so I decided to give it a shot.

After updating from firmware 519, everything initially looked good. The interface was responsive, and most devices were functioning as expected. However, a few days in, I noticed some strange behavior with my lights. They wouldn’t turn on or off automatically, even when triggered by a scene. Manually activating the scene worked, but the automation itself failed. Resetting the Vera unit didn’t resolve the issue either.

What caught my attention was the frequent flickering of the Z-Wave light on the Vera box and the constant “Please wait” message in the GUI. It was frustrating to say the least. I decided to dig deeper and found out that the Vera was continuously polling the Wunderground API, which had been flagged for excessive requests. This explained the delays and the endless “Please wait” messages.

After reverting back to firmware 519, everything went back to normal. The Wunderground API worked seamlessly, and there were no more delays or errors. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but it taught me the importance of monitoring API usage and being cautious with firmware updates, especially when dealing with older hardware.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has had similar experiences with firmware updates or API-related issues. It’s always helpful to learn from others’ experiences and avoid some of the pitfalls!

Cheers,
