My g410 doorbell Journey so far

OK, just sharing some of my experience so far.

For context: My goal was to get a new smart doorbell to use in my entry gate (outdoors), be able to seamlessly connect to Homekit and able to trigger the gate latch release in a non clumbsy way (change screens, change apps whilst answering the doorbell ring)

Ok. first challenges.

- Doorbell - Chime connection distance:
From the room where I wanted to position the chime to the doorbell there is, definitely about 5 meters apart with direct view apart from one thick wall (doorbell is positioned outside the house). It did not work. period. I had to figure out a way to position the chime outdoors inside a waterproof enclosure to ensure stable / good connection between the chime and doorbell (4 of 5 bars) and the WIFI.

Doorbell - Chime connection is MANDATORY: Although I have great Wifi coverage throughout my household (including outdoors), I was a bit disapointed when I noticed that the doorbell just HAS to connect to the chime with no other option.I would happily just click any waiver like “If you connect the doorbell to your wifi, you are aware that data will be exposed … bla bla bla” to facilitate the connection per se. I can hardly think of a technical reason to make it difficult to communicate 2 devices via wifi IP directly. Sounds like some legal concern more than anything. Either way, this could’ve solved the item above in an easier way (some vendors do this “disclaimer thing”. Eufy is one)

  • It’s a doorbell for external usage and it’s not waterproof. Doesn’t make sense to me. At the time (AUG/25) there was no official AQARA cover for it, as the G4 one did not fit properly. I had to get one printed in 3D. (details here: Silicone waterproof cover for g410? - #3 by bernardo_fortes ) Pics included there. It worked out well. I understand the pressure to put a product into market, but there should have been a AQARA solution from day 1. (PS: I don’t know if there is already a new cover now)

That said, these issus above took some unexpected and unwanted effort, but were addressed.

For on the statements below reference Wi-fi – Chime connection has STRONG signal as detected by my Deco mesh and, as stated, the CHIME - Doorbell has a stable 4 out of 5 signal bars as in AQARA app.

  • HomeKit integration: Easy to install. no further complication on that end.
  • Alexa Integration - works very well. you can chose which devices will respond to the doorbell ring. solid.
  • Home Assistant integration: No issues whatsoever. Connected via Matter. solid.

Now… the instabilites…

I have in mind that this is a recent product and I bought it a month after release, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are some rough edges still.

  • Connectivity - Every now and then, it goes offline, despite rock solid connection measurements for WIFI-CHIME and CHIME-Doorbell. For the record, I tried 2 different wifi infrastructures (Google Wifi and Deco Mesh). Usually a reboot addresses this. The latest try was to diable mesh in DECO and force the chime to connect to a singel router (the one with confirmed stronger signal). I did this yesterday and seems ok so far. Too soon to confirm. Either way, I had the same issue with 2 different Wifi infrastructures and there are reports of instability in the forum as well. I don’t know if there’s some known instability on this or not. (I would like to know)

  • I had some issues with internal automations. I tested a voice response after a given face was detected and for most times it just didn’t work. The good thing: After the latest firmware update (a few days ago) it started to work very well.

This strongly suggests that there is active development focused in crushing bugs and instabilities that are expected for very new products. I’ve seen a good improvement rate in the last 2 releases, and I hope that this continues.

Would I buy it again ? YES.
They’ll get there. It’s already in a good state and I perceived real stability evolution in recent firmwares.

What would I change: (solution focus)

  • g410’s eventual Network instability. I assume there’s something being done about it that will reach in future releases. I would like to know.
  • Homekit response is a bit laggy. Can’t pin on the doorbell though (AQARA app responses are faster than homekit, but not by much). Could be related to my old (but still 4th gen) AppleTV that runs the homkit show (wired connection to the nework, just to state)
  • I added the lock release as part of Homekit’s nearby accessories and the overall experience is great. When somebody rings and I can easily open the door works really well. 2 clicks. (as oposed to changing apps to trigger that etc…)

Is there something else I’d like to know ? Definietely.
What is the actual development roadmap, including targeted bugs. Does this exist ?

@bernardo_fortes Thanks so much for sharing your in-depth experience with the G410 doorbell! Your insights are incredibly valuable to the community.

It’s great to hear that you’ve been able to work through the initial challenges like the doorbell-chime connection distance and the lack of waterproofing. And it’s awesome that you found a creative solution with the 3D-printed cover.

The integration with HomeKit, Alexa, and Home Assistant sounds like it’s going smoothly for the most part. Regarding the instabilities you’ve encountered, connectivity issues can be frustrating, but it’s a good sign that rebooting helps. And it’s encouraging that the internal automations are working better after the firmware update.

Your suggestions for improvement are spot-on. While I don’t have information about the development roadmap or if there’s something being done about the network instability, if you have any suggestions or recommendations for improvement, you can submit feedback manually through customer service.

Keep sharing your experiences with us! It helps all of us learn more about how these products work in real-world scenarios.

Hello friend

Thank you for your detailed product experience report. I can see that you are using the G410 doorbell seriously. Regarding the several issues you mentioned, I would like to briefly respond:

  1. Will a new outdoor silicone protective case be launched for G410? Yes, we are designing it and expect you to see the new one launch in December.

  2. Why do outdoor doorbells have to be connected to indoor chimes instead of directly connecting to routers? This is because the outdoor unit is a battery powered camera/doorbell with a low-power working mode, and Apple HomeKit requires that the camera connected to it must be always online. Therefore, the indoor chime that is always connected to the power supply becomes a relay carrier, which runs the HomeKit SDK. The outdoor doorbell only transmits audio and video data to the indoor chime for processing before connecting to HomeKit (this part is not easy to understand, I can only describe it briefly). You can take a look at eufy’s S3 Pro, which also needs to be connected to a home base like S380 to support HomeKit. The same principle applies. If the doorbell/camera does not use a battery but a power supply, everything will become simple, such as the G400 doorbell you saw on IFA, which is a upcoming non-battery doorbell product from Aqara, it can be directly connected to a router to support HomeKit.

  3. G410 future software upgrade plan: 1) Some users mentioned that the default ringtone should ring once instead of twice, because in their country, ringing twice indicates the need to open the door and sign for the package, and we are adjusting it; 2) Some users have mentioned that the ringing sound of outdoor unit needs to support adjusting the volume level. We are currently modifying and supporting it, etc.

And hopefully the direct sun light bug will be fixed as well :crossed_fingers:t2:

Hi Donie,

Thanks for the info. about the “2”

2 - I get the entire battery thing vs Homekit “always online” requirement. Nonetheless, for those who opted to use the doorbell connected to an external power source, don’t have this scenario (My case). I get it. there’s always so much dev capacity and prioritization / product positioning places a big role here.

OK, now an update on the journey.

For context, I have a DECO BE22 (BE3600) node to which the Aqara doorbell and some other devices (including Eufy Cameras) connect to.

I’ve performed a series of tweaking in Wifi config to force it to connect to the specific Deco node I wanted. Wifi signal is great to the chime, but the node itself had a MEDIUM backhaul signal (and it was wireless).

I’ve seen some improvement when I changed the backhaul of this BE22 node to WIRED. It’s better now, but I never had any problem with the other devices using the same node, including latency sensitive devices such as teh Eufy cameras.

Before establishing the wired backhaul, the symptom was “weird”. There was instability. Sometimes all worked, and sometimes it functioned partially. A doorbell press would ring inside, but I could not open the camera feed per se either in Homekit or in the Aqara app.

I sense that the entire chime / doorbell are VERY sensitive when it comes to the Wifi part. It’s better now, but not 100%. For the record: Chime ↔ Deco Node signal was already excellent; Chime ↔ Camera has steady 4 bars (out of 5) and now this Deco Node is wired all the way out to the internet.

I still have the rare, ocasional all is out during some periods.

I’d like to leave the 24x7 video feed on, but I haven’t fully explored this yet. I did enable it at some point, but I had the impression that it slowed down overall responsiveness. Fair to say that I did not play around much there as well and it could be a false impression. Still to be investigated.

I did disable the entire Homekit face recognition as overall responsiveness was terrible, but enabled the recording only. Did not explore much more, but it’s better, for sure.

Aqara automations (audio response recorded). It’s still a hit and miss. Doesn’t work always.

As I get more info, I may post here.
