Aqara FP400 Spatial Multi-Sensor: Hands-On Review & Experience
Hi everyone! As the title says, I wanted to share a summary of my experience using the Aqara FP400 Spatial Multi-Sensor over the past couple of weeks. Overall, it works brilliantly for my setup, but it definitely requires a bit of patience to dial in.
- Setup, Height, and Zone Mapping
- Finding the Right Spot: It took me about three days of testing to find the ideal placement and height. Unlike older models, you now need to input the exact mounting height during setup, which I believe is why it offers superior accuracy compared to the FP2.
- Smart Zone Creation: The zone mapping approach is also much better. During setup, the FP400 automatically maps out a primary main zone, getting about 15% to 20% of the work done right away. From there, you can easily sub-divide and add custom micro-zones within that main space.
- Real-World Bathroom Automation (Thread Connection)
I installed mine in the bathroom and connected it via Thread, which is where the real smart home magic starts:
- Daytime Automations: Because the bathroom gets plenty of natural light during the day, the lights stay off. Instead, the sensor triggers background automation like automatically turning on the extractor fan only when I sit on the toilet or step into the shower.
- Nighttime Automations: This is where the sensor truly shines:
- Night Light: I use an Aqara gateway exclusively as a night light, programmed to turn on when presence is detected at night and turn off when the room is empty.
- Shower Routine: If someone takes a shower during the night, both the main light and the extractor fan turn on automatically. However, the light stays on until all presence is cleared from the entire main zone, ensuring the light never cuts out prematurely.
- Verdict: FP400 vs. FP2
Compared to the FP2, the FP400 is noticeably more responsive and detects presence much better.
-
If you are wondering whether the FP400 is better than the FP2, the answer is a definite Yes. Whether you should buy one ultimately depends on your specific needs, but I personally highly recommend it—just bear in mind that you will need a few days of testing and patience to find the sweet spot for your mounting position!
-
I hope this review helps you determine whether the FP400 is worth purchasing or upgrading to.
-
Finally, a sincere thank you to the Aqara team for continuing to innovate and design devices that genuinely improve our daily home lives.
