I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of automating my home, and after months of research and experimentation, I finally managed to set up a smart lighting system that’s both functional and energy-efficient. Here’s my story!The Challenge I wanted to create a system where my living room lights would automatically adjust based on the time of day and my presence. The goal was to have bright lights during the day, softer tones in the evening, and complete darkness when I left the room. However, integrating multiple devices and ensuring seamless communication between them was no small feat.The Setup I started by purchasing a combination of Zigbee and Wi-Fi enabled lights from various brands. To keep things simple, I decided to use a single hub (the Samsung SmartThings Hub) to manage everything. The next step was configuring the automation rules in the SmartThings app. The Process 1. Motion Detection: I installed a motion sensor in the living room. This would detect when I entered or left the room. 2. Time-Based Adjustments: I programmed the lights to change intensity based on the time of day. During daylight hours, the lights stay dim, and as the sun sets, they gradually brighten. 3. Presence Detection: Using geofencing, the system detects when I’m away and automatically turns off the lights to save energy. The Outcome After several weeks of tweaking and testing, the system now works flawlessly! The lights adjust seamlessly, and I no longer have to worry about wasting energy.
