After months of planning and some trial and error, I’m thrilled to share my crawl space monitoring project!
This setup has been a game-changer for maintaining the integrity of my home, especially during the rainy season.
The Challenge:
My crawl space often floods due to irrigation water from our ditch, which happens every two weeks during crop season. The water table rises, and without proper drainage, both sides of my crawl space would flood to about 2-3 inches above the rock/dirt floor.湿度 was also a significant issue, reaching 78% when I started the project in November.
The Solution:
I installed two sump pumps and a dehumidifier to tackle the water and humidity issues. To monitor everything, I turned to smart home technology:
- KASA KP115 Smart Plugs: These provide energy info to Home Assistant and allow on/off control.
- Float Switches: Trigger the sump pumps when water levels rise, using wattage thresholds to start and stop the automation.
- FingerBot: Controls the dehumidifier based on a separate sensor, as the built-in sensor was unreliable.
Results:
It’s been a few weeks since everything was set up, and I’m thrilled with how well it’s working! The automation system is reliably monitoring the sump pumps and dehumidifier, and I’ve reduced the number of automations from four to three. I’m even considering streamlining it further to make it even more efficient.
Next Steps:
My focus now is on reducing clutter and optimizing the system. I’m also open to sharing my learnings with anyone who might benefit from them! If you have questions or need advice, feel free to reach out. ![]()
This project has given me peace of mind, knowing my crawl space is under control. It’s a great example of how smart home technology can solve real-world problems! ![]()
