As someone who values convenience and automation, I’ve been exploring ways to integrate smart locks into my daily life. Recently, I came across an interesting challenge while trying to install a Nuki smart lock in a shared parking garage. The situation is a bit unusual, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to share my experience and see if others have encountered similar issues or have suggestions.
The garage in question is used by around 100 people and has multiple pedestrian entrances across two levels. All the doors currently use standard euro profile double cylinders without an emergency function or inner knob. Earlier this year, all the locks were replaced, but the doors remain unlatched, allowing easy access from the inside while requiring a key from the outside.
My goal is to enable everyone in the garage to use a single key to open any entrance, and ideally, allow myself to unlock the doors using my phone without replacing the existing locks. After researching, I realized that installing the Nuki smart lock instead of the current inner knob might be the least disruptive solution. However, I encountered a problem: there’s no existing adapter for the handle rod, which I believe uses an 8mm standard in the EU. I considered 3D printing a custom adapter, but I wanted to see if others had experience with similar installations or had encountered and solved this issue.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has successfully installed a Nuki lock in a similar setup or has advice on creating or sourcing the necessary adapter. Additionally, if anyone has experience with shared spaces or multi-user environments and how they’ve handled smart lock installations, I’d be grateful for any insights or recommendations.
This project is a bit ambitious, but I’m excited about the potential to streamline access for everyone in the garage while maintaining security and convenience. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!
