Optimizing Geofencing for Smart Home Heating

I’ve been experimenting with geofencing to control my home heating system, and I wanted to share my experience and some tips for anyone looking to do something similar.

For those who aren’t familiar, geofencing uses your location to trigger smart home actions. In my case, I wanted to adjust my heating based on how far away I am from home. The idea is to save energy when I’m not there but ensure the house is warm when I arrive.

Initially, I set up a basic geofencing zone around my home, but I quickly realized that adjusting the heating based solely on my immediate proximity wasn’t ideal. After some research, I discovered that extending the geofencing range to about 3-4 kilometers ahead of my arrival could make a big difference. This way, the heating starts warming up the house well before I get home, ensuring it’s cozy by the time I walk through the door.

Here’s how I set it up:

  • I used the Viessmann app to adjust the geofencing settings.
  • I set the outer boundary to about 4 kilometers from home.
  • I programmed the system to start heating the house once I’m within that range.
  • For added efficiency, I also set the heating to a lower setting when I’m outside the zone.

The results have been fantastic! My house is now perfectly heated when I arrive, and I’ve noticed a reduction in energy consumption during the times when I’m away.

If you’re thinking about trying something similar, here are a few tips:

  • Start with a smaller zone and gradually adjust based on your daily routine.
  • Test different heating schedules to find the balance between comfort and efficiency.
  • Don’t hesitate to explore the settings in your smart home app—there are often more options than you realize!

I’d love to hear how others are using geofencing to enhance their smart home setups. Have you tried anything creative with geofencing? Let me know in the comments!
