Optimizing GIFs for Smart Home Automation: My Experience with Govee

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with integrating GIFs into my smart home setup using Govee devices. I’ve been experimenting with their DIY feature, and while it’s been a lot of fun, I ran into a bit of a snag with laggy animations.

Initially, I was thrilled to upload custom GIFs to my devices, but I noticed that some animations were choppy and didn’t run smoothly. After some research, I discovered that the number of frames in a GIF plays a significant role in its performance. If a GIF has too many frames, the app tends to drop some, resulting in that laggy effect we all want to avoid.

Here’s what I did to fix it: I found that reducing the frame count to around 20-30 made a world of difference. I used the Samsung Gallery app to delete every other frame, effectively halving the total number. If you’re on an iPhone or use Google Photos, there are similar editing tools available. After re-uploading the optimized GIF, the difference was night and day! The animations ran smoothly, and my smart home setup looked much more polished.

I’d love to hear how others are using GIFs in their smart home projects. Have you encountered similar issues, and how did you resolve them? Let’s share tips and tricks to make our smart home experiences even better! :art::sparkles:
