Outdoor WyzeCam Setup and Automation Tips

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent project of setting up my WyzeCam outdoors in a rainproof setup. After some research and trial and error, I found a great solution using materials from a local store called TAP Plastics. I used a transparent box that fits the WyzeCam perfectly and added some protective measures to ensure the camera functions well even in wet conditions.

Here’s what I did:

  • Box Setup: I used a Flex Hinge Plastic Box from TAP Plastics. It’s perfect because it fits the WyzeCam snugly and has a hinge that makes it easy to access the camera if needed.
  • Lens Protection: I cut out a small window for the lens and IR LEDs. To protect this area, I used Apple Watch Gorilla Glass screen protectors. They’re thin enough not to interfere with the IR light and provide great protection against the elements.
  • Sealing: I sealed the edges of the glass window with outdoor glue to ensure no water gets in. I also made sure the box was mounted upside down to keep water from pooling inside.
  • Heat Dissipation: I added small holes at the bottom to let heat escape and allow the USB cord to pass through. This helps prevent overheating, especially in warmer climates.
  • Optional Enhancements: I considered adding reflective material inside to reflect sun heat and even a small roof to provide additional shade. A thin layer of glass coating, like Rain-X, could also help keep water from accumulating on the lens.

I’ve been really happy with this setup. It’s much cheaper than some of the commercial options I saw online, and it’s tailored to my specific needs. Plus, it looks much cleaner than some of the birdhouse-like solutions I’ve seen.

Now, thinking about automation, I’d love to integrate this setup with my smart home system. For example, I’d like the camera to activate motion detection during certain times of the day or to send alerts to my phone when it detects movement. If anyone has experience with similar setups or can suggest some automation ideas, I’d love to hear them!

This project has been a great way to get more out of my WyzeCam and improve my home security setup. I hope this helps someone else looking to do something similar. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!

Cheers,
