Recommended Motion Sensors for Smart Lighting

Hey everyone! I’ve recently set up my Vera Lite and am in the process of converting my home’s lighting to Z-Wave. One thing I’m really looking to do is set up motion sensors in the darker hallways and staircases to automatically turn on the lights at night. While I know the Kwikset lock can be used to trigger lights, I’m not sure if I need door sensors as well.

I’ve been doing some research on motion sensors and wanted to share what I’ve found. I’m looking for sensors that are battery-powered, inconspicuous, and won’t break the bank. Here are a few options I’ve come across:

  1. Aqara Motion Sensor - This sensor is highly rated for its sensitivity and long battery life. It also supports two-way communication, which is great for detailed activity reporting in Vera.

  2. Ecolink Motion Sensor - A budget-friendly option that still offers reliable performance. It supports Z-Wave Plus for stable connections and quick response times.

  3. Ring Spotlight Cam Wired - While not a traditional motion sensor, this offers a comprehensive security solution with a built-in camera and floodlight.

A few tips I’ve learned during my setup:

  • Placement is Key - Install sensors in optimal locations to avoid false triggers. Hallways and staircases are ideal spots.
  • Avoid Interference - Keep sensors away from HVAC vents and fans to prevent false alarms.
  • Test and Adjust - After installation, thoroughly test and adjust sensitivity and delay settings to suit your family’s routines.

Would love to hear everyone’s recommendations or tips! What sensors have worked well for you?
