I’ve been exploring the possibilities of automating my home, and setting up smart lights has been a top priority. However, I’m encountering a few challenges that I hope the community can help me overcome.
My goal is to create a rule where my hallway lights automatically turn on when I arrive home. I’ve set up a smart lock that detects when I’m nearby and a motion sensor in the hallway. The idea is that as I approach the door, the lock detects my presence, and upon opening the door, the motion sensor triggers the lights to come on. Sounds straightforward, right?
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Installed a smart lock with geofencing capabilities.
- Set up a motion sensor in the hallway connected to my smart hub.
- Created a basic rule in the hub’s app to link the lock’s ‘opened’ event to the hallway lights turning on.
The issue I’m facing is that sometimes the lights don’t turn on immediately, or they turn on even when I’m not home. It’s a bit frustrating, but I’m determined to get this working smoothly.

Additionally, I’m curious about alternative approaches. For instance, could integrating a smart plug with the lights provide better control? Or perhaps tweaking the geofencing settings on the lock might help with more consistent detection.
