Severe range issues with Hub M3 and U200 locks – only works at very close distance

Hello Aqara community,

I am experiencing serious range and connectivity issues with my Aqara setup and would appreciate some clarification or advice.

My setup:
• 1 × Aqara Hub M3
• 2 × Aqara Smart Lock U200
• Hub M3 integrated into Home Assistant

Problem description:

During the initial pairing of both U200 locks, the setup only succeeded when the Hub M3 was placed extremely close to the lock (around 50 cm).
If the hub was any farther away, the setup always failed with a “cannot establish connection” message.

After pairing the locks this way, the problem unfortunately continues in daily operation:
• The Hub M3 is now placed close to Lock #2
• In Home Assistant, the hub and Lock #2 are detected and work correctly
• Lock #1, which is only about 5 meters away in direct line of sight, is not detected at all

My questions:
1. Is this expected behavior, or is the Hub M3’s Bluetooth/Thread range really that limited?
2. Am I doing something wrong in the setup?
3. Do I need to add each U200 lock individually to Home Assistant, or is it sufficient to add only the Hub M3 (since the hub already knows both locks)?
4. Is there any way to view a connection or topology overview (signal strength / RSSI between hub and devices)?
5. Are there recommended placement rules or known issues with the Hub M3 and U200 combination?

At the moment, the extremely short effective range makes the system very hard to use, so I would really appreciate any guidance or official clarification.

Thank you very much for your help!

  1. I think it depends on the building, I have a better range, but my hallway is open. Any brick/concrete walls (and any doors) will significantly decrease the signal strength. But you can extend the Thread network by using line-powered devices (the same principle as extending the Zigbee network).
  2. I think it’s ok
  3. I think the locks cannot be added to more that one hub anyway, but they can be “borrowed” via the hub just like every Matter device. To “borrow” the device you might use the Matter pairing code from U200 settings.
  4. I think not, but maybe Bluetooth signal analyzers might show signal strength of nearby devices and it can help you check if it’s the lock’s location.
  5. Personally I don’t have any problems, but my hub is about 2-3 m away and I have open hallway (no doors).

:grinning:
