I’ve recently taken the plunge into the world of smart home automation by purchasing my first Shelly device—a Shelly 2.5. From what I’ve heard, these devices are supposed to be a breeze to set up and use. Unfortunately, my experience hasn’t been quite as smooth as I’d hoped. Let me walk you through my journey and hopefully, we can figure this out together!
First off, I followed the standard setup process. I plugged in the Shelly 2.5 near my Fritzbox 7490, which operates on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. I disabled mobile data on my Samsung S7 and connected it directly to the Shelly’s Wi-Fi. Then, I opened the Shelly app, created a new room, and attempted to add the device. The app detected the Shelly and prompted me to name it and save it. But here’s where things went sideways—instead of a success message, I got an error: ‘The connection to the server has been lost!’
I tried everything I could think of. I reset the Shelly, manually connected it to my home network via its IP address (192.168.33.1), updated the firmware, and even attempted to integrate it with my MQTT broker. The MQTT connection worked, but the app still wouldn’t let me add it as a device. I’m at a loss—does anyone have any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
On a slightly more positive note, I did manage to get the Shelly working with my MQTT setup, so it’s not a complete bust. But I really wanted to use the Shelly app for seamless integration with my other smart devices. If anyone has encountered this issue before or has a workaround, I’d be eternally grateful for the advice!
Fingers crossed we can get this sorted out. Happy to provide any additional details or logs if needed. Thanks in advance for your help!
