Shelly Dimmer Integration and Automation Tips

I recently upgraded my home with some smart lighting solutions, and I wanted to share my experiences and tips with the community. One of the devices I’ve been working with is the Shelly Dimmer, which I’ve successfully integrated into my lighting setup. However, I encountered a few challenges along the way that I thought might be helpful to discuss.

Shelly Dimmer Integration
I have an LED ceiling light in my living room, which is controlled by a switch connected to a Stromstoßschalter. Initially, I was unsure whether I could directly connect the Shelly Dimmer to the Stromstoßschalter or if it needed to be connected to the existing wall switch. After some research and experimentation, I found that connecting the Shelly Dimmer directly to the Stromstoßschalter was possible, but it required a bit of rewiring. This setup has worked perfectly for me, allowing me to control the dimmer through my smartphone or voice commands.

Automation Tips
One thing I’ve been exploring is creating automations using Node-RED. I set up a flow to notify me when a new device joins my network. However, I ran into an issue where I received notifications for all devices, not just the new ones. After some troubleshooting, I realized I needed to filter the notifications based on the device’s MAC address. This involved modifying the flow to check if the device was already registered before sending an alert. It’s a small tweak, but it made a big difference in keeping my notifications relevant.

Challenges and Solutions
Another challenge I faced was with the Sun Events app. After a power outage, the app seemed to reset to a previous date, causing my lights to turn on at incorrect times. Restarting the app manually fixed the issue, but I’m still curious if there’s a way to automate this process. If anyone has experience with similar issues or knows of a workaround, I’d love to hear about it!

Overall, integrating the Shelly Dimmer and setting up these automations has been a rewarding experience. It’s amazing how these devices can enhance the comfort and convenience of my home. I’m excited to continue exploring more features and automations as I expand my smart home setup.

If anyone has tips or suggestions on improving these setups or avoiding common pitfalls, please share! Happy smart home tinkering everyone!
