I recently took the plunge into the world of smart home security by purchasing a SmartThings hub (v2) along with a Samsung SmartCam HD Pro. My goal was to replace my old iSmartAlarm system with something more integrated and user-friendly. While setting everything up within the SmartThings app was straightforward, I ran into a couple of hiccups that I thought I’d share in case others are facing similar issues.
Initially, I was excited to discover the ‘Smart Alarm’ app, which seemed to tick all the boxes for what I wanted—customizable delays and more control over my security setup. However, I quickly noticed that my Samsung SmartCam wasn’t showing up in the camera list within the Smart Alarm app, even though it was perfectly visible in the main SmartThings app. This was a bit puzzling, as I was really hoping to use the camera’s video recording feature alongside the alarm system.
After some digging and reaching out to the community, I realized that the camera’s compatibility with third-party apps like Smart Alarm isn’t always guaranteed. While the camera itself works seamlessly within the SmartThings ecosystem, integrating it with external apps can sometimes hit a snag. To work around this, I decided to stick with the built-in alarm system in the SmartThings app, which still allows me to access the camera’s video feed when the alarm is triggered. It’s not the perfect setup I initially envisioned, but it gets the job done!
Another thing I noticed was that the status of my security system seemed a bit confusing at first. The main SmartThings app would show as “Security Ok, Disarmed” even after arming the system through the Smart Alarm app. This was a bit disorienting, but I soon figured out that the two apps are essentially separate systems. To avoid confusion, I made sure to arm and disarm the system solely through the Smart Alarm app and kept the main SmartThings app as a backup for monitoring.
Reflecting on this journey, I’m really impressed with how much control and customization the SmartThings ecosystem offers. Even though I encountered a few bumps along the way, the community support and resources available have been invaluable. If you’re considering making the switch to SmartThings, my advice is to take it one step at a time, explore all the built-in features before diving into third-party apps, and don’t hesitate to reach out to forums like this one for help.
