I’ve been on a mission to create the perfect smart bed presence system for my bedroom, and I’m thrilled to share my journey and success with the community! ![]()
For those who are curious, my setup revolves around using a pressure mat combined with a Z-Wave door sensor. The idea is to detect when both me and my partner are in bed, ensuring our smart home knows when we’re ready for a good night’s sleep. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing—there were a few hurdles I had to overcome along the way.
One major concern was ensuring the system could accurately detect our presence even when our phones were fully charged. I was worried that once the phones hit 100%, the power draw would be too minimal for the system to detect. After some research and testing, I discovered that even at full charge, there’s still a slight power draw that the system can pick up. This was a relief because it meant I didn’t have to rely solely on the pressure mat!
Another challenge was integrating everything seamlessly. I used a Z-Wave outlet to monitor the power draw from our phone chargers. By setting up a flow in OpenHAB, I could detect changes in power consumption, which indicated whether we were in bed or not. It took some tweaking, but I finally got it working perfectly!
The best part? This setup has completely transformed my bedtime routine. Now, as soon as we get into bed, our smart lights dim to a soothing level, our thermostat adjusts to the ideal sleeping temperature, and our smart speaker starts playing our favorite relaxation playlist. It’s like having a personal sleep concierge! ![]()
I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried something similar or has tips for improving this setup. Let’s keep the brainstorming going and help each other create even more amazing smart home experiences! ![]()
