I’ve been diving into the world of smart cameras and wanted to share my experience with automating them based on presence detection. As a new homeowner, security has always been a top priority for me, and integrating smart cameras into my setup has been a game-changer.
Here’s the setup I’ve been working on: I’ve installed a few hacked Xiaomi XiaoFang cameras around my property. The goal is to have them record continuously when I’m away but turn off automatically when I’m at home. This way, I save on storage and ensure privacy when I’m around.
I’ve already implemented presence detection using two mobile devices, and it’s working like a charm. The next step was connecting this presence state to the cameras. I’m currently using the motionEye addon for camera management, but I’m curious if there’s a more streamlined way to achieve this within Home Assistant.
I’ve come across some solutions involving automations and binary sensors, but I’m not entirely sure how to tie them all together. If anyone has successfully integrated presence detection with camera automation, I’d love to hear about your setup! Any tips or best practices would be greatly appreciated.
This project has been a fun challenge, and I’m excited to see how it evolves. Security automation is such a powerful tool, and it’s amazing how much control we have over our home systems these days. Looking forward to learning more from the community!
