I’ve been experimenting with different ways to organize my smart devices, and I wanted to share some insights that might help others avoid common pitfalls. Like many of you, I use both HomeKit and Home Assistant, and the way I name my devices has a big impact on how they work in each system.
At first, I tried putting the room name at the beginning of each device name, like ‘Living Room Chair Lamp’. This worked great for sorting in Home Assistant, but it caused some issues in HomeKit. Siri would sometimes get confused if I tried to reference the lamp without mentioning the room. After some trial and error, I found a middle ground by removing the room name from the HomeKit display name but keeping it in the Home Assistant name. This keeps things organized in one system while making voice commands simpler in the other.
Another thing I discovered is the importance of consistency. Whether you put the room name at the start or end, stick with one method to keep things predictable. I also learned that it’s worth periodically reviewing your device names, especially after adding new devices or moving things around the house.
If you have any tips or tricks for organizing your smart devices, I’d love to hear them! Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other create the most efficient smart homes possible.
