Smart Garage Door Automation with Shelly and Home Assistant

Hey everyone! :rocket: I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I wanted to share my recent project with you all. I’ve managed to set up a smart garage door system using a Shelly 1 and Home Assistant, and it’s been a fantastic journey! Let me walk you through how I did it and some tips along the way. First off, my goal was to control my garage door using voice commands like “Alexa, open the garage” or through my smartphone. I also wanted to ensure that the system was secure, especially since I plan to use it for remote access. I started by connecting my existing garage door opener to the Shelly 1. The Shelly 1 acts as a smart relay, allowing me to control the garage door via Wi-Fi. I followed the instructions from the Shelly documentation and set up the device on my network. The next step was integrating it with Home Assistant. I used the Shelly integration within Home Assistant to discover and add the device. Once it was recognized, I configured it as a switch and set up some automations. For example, if I press the button on my smartphone, the garage door opens, and it automatically closes after a set amount of time. One thing I struggled with initially was ensuring that the system was secure. I wanted to make sure that only authorized people could access the garage. I found that setting up a whitelist for phone numbers worked perfectly. This way, if someone tries to access the garage from an unauthorized number, it gets blocked automatically. I also integrated the system with my Alexa devices. Setting up the routines was straightforward, and now I can control the garage door hands-free. It’s incredibly convenient, especially when I’m carrying groceries or tools. Here’s a quick tip for anyone looking to do something similar: Always test your setup thoroughly before relying on it fully. I did a few test runs to make sure the garage door opened and closed correctly and that the automation worked as intended. Another thing I loved about this project is how customizable it is. If I ever want to add more features, like motion detection or integration with my security system, I can easily do so without major overhauls. Overall, this project has been a huge success for me. It’s not only made my life more convenient but also added a layer of security to my home. If you’re thinking about automating your garage door, I highly recommend giving the Shelly 1 and Home Assistant a try. The combination is powerful, flexible, and surprisingly easy to set up. Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s something specific you’d like to know about my setup. I’d love to hear about your smart home projects too!
