Smart Grilling: Automating My BBQ Setup

I’ve always loved grilling, especially during the colder months when it’s cozy to stay indoors while the grill does its thing outside. But there’s one thing that’s always annoyed me: having to step out onto the balcony every few minutes to check if the grill has reached the right temperature. It’s not just inconvenient; it’s also a bit dangerous when it’s freezing cold outside!

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and turn my grill into a smart device. I’ve been experimenting with smart home tech for a while now, and this seemed like the perfect project to dive into. Here’s what I did:

I started by purchasing a MAX6675 K-Type thermocouple and an ESP32 Wroom module. The setup was surprisingly straightforward. I drilled a small hole in the back of my grill, just above the grates, and installed the temperature sensor. It fits perfectly and doesn’t interfere with the grill’s performance.

For the ESP32, I designed a small enclosure to keep everything neat and protected. I was a bit worried that the sensor might overheat, but after testing it a few times, I realized it handles the heat just fine. The best part? I can now monitor the grill’s temperature from the comfort of my living room through my smartphone.

I also created a simple automation that alerts me when the grill reaches the desired temperature. It’s incredibly handy, especially when I’m multitasking in the kitchen. I even added a dropdown menu in my home automation system to select the type of meat I’m grilling, which automatically sets the ideal temperature.

This project has completely changed how I approach grilling. It’s not just about convenience anymore; it’s about safety and consistency. I can now ensure that my food is cooked to perfection every time without having to constantly monitor the grill.

If you’re thinking about trying something similar, I’d recommend starting small. Maybe begin with just the temperature sensor and then gradually add more features as you get comfortable. The satisfaction of seeing your project come together and knowing that you made it yourself is truly rewarding.

I’m already brainstorming my next smart home project—maybe automating my smoker next? Who knows, but one thing’s for sure: smart tech has made grilling a whole lot more enjoyable!
