Smart Heating System Integration and Local Control

Hi everyone, I’m really excited to share my journey with integrating a smart heating system into my home. I’ve been researching and experimenting with different setups, and I wanted to document my experiences in case it helps others or sparks some discussions.

I’ve been using the Honeywell Evohome system for quite some time now, and I must say, it’s been a game-changer for me. The ability to control everything locally without relying on a third-party cloud server is something I highly value. It gives me a sense of security and reliability, especially since I’ve had some issues with cloud-based systems in the past.

One of the key features I love about the Evohome system is the local control via the HGI80 gateway. It allows me to manage my TRVs and heating circuits seamlessly. However, I’ve noticed that finding compatible hardware can be a bit of a challenge. The newer models seem to lean heavily on cloud services, which isn’t ideal for me. I’ve been lucky enough to find a few older units that still work perfectly, but I’m curious if others have found alternative solutions or newer hardware that maintains this local control functionality.

I’d also love to hear about others’ experiences with integrating different heating systems into their smart homes. Do you prefer a fully cloud-based system, or do you, like me, prefer the control and security of local management? I’m always on the lookout for new insights or tips that could enhance my setup.

Another thing I’ve been exploring is the use of Zigbee for controlling my TRVs. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but the potential benefits in terms of reliability and energy efficiency are really appealing. I’d love to hear if anyone else has had success with Zigbee-based solutions or if there are any pitfalls I should be aware of.

In summary, my experience with the Honeywell Evohome system has been overwhelmingly positive, but I’m always eager to learn more and improve my setup. If anyone has recommendations, tips, or just wants to share their own experiences, I’d be thrilled to hear from you!

Best regards,
