Next, I connected everything to my SmartThings Hub. This allowed me to create routines and automations that suited my lifestyle. For instance, if I forget to close the garage door, the system sends me a notification on my phone.
The Challenges
It wasn’t all smooth sailing. Initially, I struggled with getting the garage door sensor to communicate reliably with the hub. After some troubleshooting, I realized the issue was with the placement of the sensor—it was too close to a metal object, causing interference. Moving it a few inches away solved the problem.
Another challenge was setting up the automation to open the garage door when I approached. I had to adjust the geofencing settings multiple times to ensure it triggered at the right distance. Once that was sorted, it worked like magic!
The Payoff

- Security alerts: If the garage door is left open for too long, I get an alert on my phone. If it’s opened outside of my scheduled times, the spotlight cam starts recording and sends me a notification.
