Smart Home Automation Success Story: Motion Detection and Lighting

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a success story about my recent smart home automation project. I’ve been working on setting up a motion detection system in my bedroom, and it’s been a fantastic journey! :rocket:

I started by researching different options for motion sensors and lighting automation. After some trial and error, I settled on using a combination of a pressure mat and a Z-Wave outlet. The idea was to have the lights turn on automatically when I step into bed, based on the power draw from my phone charger. It sounds a bit quirky, but it’s been working like a charm! :dart:

Here’s how I set it up:

  1. Pressure Mat: I placed a pressure-sensitive mat under my bed. This detects when I’m lying down.
  2. Z-Wave Outlet: I connected my phone charger to a Z-Wave outlet, which allows me to monitor the power draw.
  3. Smart App Automation: Using my smart home app, I created a flow that checks for power draw from the charger. If the phone is plugged in and drawing power, it triggers the lights to turn on. If there’s no power draw (meaning I’ve unplugged my phone), the lights stay off.

The best part? This system works even when my phone is fully charged! The slight power draw is enough for the app to detect, ensuring the lights come on consistently. It’s been a game-changer for my late-night routines.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has other creative ideas for motion detection and lighting automation! :star2:

Cheers,
