I’ve always been a bit of a tinkerer when it comes to smart home tech, and recently I took on a project that’s really paid off. I wanted to set up a system where my Google Mini speaker would give a voice alert if my sliding glass doors were left open for too long. Here’s how I did it and what I learned along the way!
First, I started by researching how others had tackled similar projects. I found a lot of helpful posts about using contact sensors and automations, but nothing that exactly fit my needs. I decided to go with contact sensors on both doors and connect them to my smart hub. The next step was figuring out the automation part—how to trigger an alert after a certain amount of time had passed.
I stumbled upon a great guide that suggested using a combination of timers and voice alerts. I set up the sensors to detect when the doors were open and then used an automation rule to start a timer. If the doors were still open after 15 minutes, the Google Mini would chime and say, “Please close the sliding glass doors.” It took a bit of trial and error to get the timing right, but it’s been working perfectly for weeks now!
One tip I’d pass on is to test your setup thoroughly. I did a quick test by opening one door and waiting to see if the alert triggered. It did, and it was pretty satisfying to hear the speaker remind me to close the door. I also found that using the Home Assistant app made it easier to tweak the settings until everything worked smoothly.
This project has been a fantastic way to add an extra layer of security and convenience to my home. It’s also given me the confidence to take on more complex automations in the future. If you’re thinking about something similar, I’d say go for it—it’s totally doable with a bit of research and patience!
