Smart Home Journey: From Shelly to Athom Homey Pro

After years of experimenting with various smart home solutions, I wanted to share my journey and experiences with the community. This post is a mix of triumphs, challenges, and lessons learned along the way.

2016-2017: The Early Days with Tellstick Lite v2 and Nexa
I started my smart home adventure with the Tellstick Lite v2 and Nexa 433 devices. The setup was straightforward, and the basic functions worked well. However, I quickly noticed the limitations of the 433MHz frequency band—unreliable communication and lack of security. After a year, I tried switching to Z-Wave but faced major issues with the Tellstick’s poor range. This led me to temporarily revert to Nexa 433 devices for a few more years.

2017: The Nexa Bridge Disaster
In 2017, I decided to upgrade to the Nexa Bridge, hoping it would provide better Z-Wave support. Unfortunately, this was a monumental failure. The devices had a high failure rate, with defective Z-Wave chips and units that simply died. I ended up getting my money back but wasted valuable time.

2020: The Fibaro HomeCenter 3 Hype
After researching, I invested in the Fibaro HomeCenter 3, expecting it to be the solution to all my problems. While it had impressive specs, it fell short in many areas. The 433MHz support was proprietary, which forced me to abandon my Nexa devices. The Zigbee implementation was still in beta, and the device crashed frequently. Despite updates, the performance never met my expectations.

2022: The Futurehome Smarthub 2.0 Experiment
By 2022, I was frustrated with slow progress in the smart home space and decided to try the Norwegian-designed Futurehome Smarthub 2.0. The GUI was impressive, and it supported both Zigbee and Z-Wave. However, it had serious reliability issues, slow response times, and a lack of staff to address bugs. This experience taught me the importance of thorough research before investing in new hardware.

2023: The Athom Homey Pro Early 2023 Experience
After several disappointments, I carefully chose the Athom Homey Pro 2023. The setup was a breeze, especially with the advanced flow feature, which saved me a lot of time. The hardware is fast, and the response time is excellent. While there are some missing features and minor design flaws, the overall experience has been positive. I look forward to seeing how this device evolves in the future.

Lessons Learned

  • Research Thoroughly: Don’t rush into purchases without checking reviews and community feedback.
  • Compatibility is Key: Ensure that your chosen system supports your existing devices or plan for a complete overhaul.
  • Patience Pays Off: Smart home setups can be complex, but persistence leads to rewarding results.

I hope this journey inspires others to share their own smart home experiences and challenges. Let’s continue to learn and grow together in this exciting space!

Cheers,
