Smart Home on a Budget: Aqara Edition

Hey ,

Share a little journey of mine in case anyone’s looking to build out a smart home without burning a hole in their wallet. I started with Aqara mostly because their stuff is super affordable but also surprisingly reliable. Honestly didn’t realize how deep in I’d get.

I kicked off with just a motion sensor and a hub — under $50 total. From there, it kind of snowballed. Paired a few door/window sensors, tossed in a couple of smart plugs, and now I’ve got lights turning off when I leave, air purifier kicking in automatically when humidity spikes, and my coffee maker firing up in the morning like it knows me.

All on a pretty tight budget.

The trick for me was starting small and figuring out what automation I’d actually use day-to-day. No need to smartify everything in one go. Also got most things during sales on AliExpress and Amazon — helps a ton.

Anyone else riding the budget-smart-home train with Aqara? Would love to hear hacks/tips to get even more bang for the buck. Let’s swap ideas!

@ThermoTamer It’s fantastic to hear about your journey into building a smart home on a budget using Aqara products! Your strategy of starting small and focusing on automations that offer real daily benefits is spot on. Aqara’s hubs and sensors, like the motion sensor and door/window sensors, are indeed excellent choices for affordability and reliability.

Your approach to gradually expanding your setup, taking advantage of sales, and tailoring automations to your lifestyle is both practical and inspiring. You’ve creatively used the sensors to automate tasks like lighting, air purification, and even your morning coffee routine, which is a great example of maximizing convenience without overspending.
