I’m thrilled to share my ongoing project, Smart Home on Wheels, where I’m transforming my RV into a mobile workstation and entertainment hub. This journey has been a mix of excitement and learning, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and tips along the way!
The Vision
My goal is to create a fully functional smart home environment within my RV. This includes temperature monitoring, media control, VPN connectivity, and remote access. I’ve decided to use a few Raspberry Pi 3’s alongside openHAB for this project, as it offers the flexibility I need without being tied to a single ecosystem.
The Setup
Here’s what I’m planning:
- Temperature Monitoring: A Pi Zero W with sensors at different heights inside and outside the RV.
- Servers: Separate Pis for file storage, media, and VPN routing.
- openHAB Hub: Centralizing everything with openHAB for seamless integration.
- Battery and Solar Power: Running everything off DC power with the addition of solar panels to keep things sustainable.
Challenges and Questions
I’m new to both RV modifications and openHAB, so I’m reaching out for advice:
- DC Switches: What’s the best way to integrate DC-powered devices into my setup?
- Temperature Sensors: Are there off-the-shelf options that can handle both inside and outside temps, or should I build my own?
- Battery Monitoring: Any recommendations for tracking battery levels without adding complexity?
Why openHAB?
I was drawn to openHAB for its ability to work across different protocols. I don’t want to be limited to one brand or system—I want flexibility to mix and match devices as needed. That said, I’m not sure if I’m overcomplicating things. Any advice on simplifying the setup would be appreciated!
The Future
Long-term, I envision this RV as a fully autonomous smart space, capable of adapting to different environments and power sources. It’s a big project, but breaking it down into smaller tasks makes it manageable.
Call to Action
If you’ve tackled similar projects or have insights into optimizing my setup, I’d love to hear from you! Whether it’s about hardware choices, openHAB configurations, or RV-specific challenges, your input is invaluable.
