There have been a few people recently who have had problems with their smart home. I previously wrote a post about resetting the home. As some people said this was useful information, I decided to refine what I wrote and create a full guide as part of my Smart Home Guide Series. As usual, there is a downloadable PDF above the guide if you wish to keep it for your records or share it with someone who may benefit from it.

Smart Home Reset & Recovery Guide
How I Restored Speed, Stability & Reliability to My Entire Smart Home System
Overview
If you’re dealing with unresponsive devices, sluggish automations, or a smart home that seems to be falling apart after months or years of expanding it, this guide explains exactly what I did to completely restore reliability.
This process is especially useful for:
- Larger smart homes
- Systems running for a long time
- Setups that have become cluttered
- Users wanting a fresh start
It might feel drastic, but for me it produced instant, dramatic improvements.
The Problem
Over time, I noticed several symptoms of a smart home that had become unstable:
- Automations triggering slowly
- Lights reacting with noticeable delays
- Devices randomly becoming unresponsive
- “Little issues” building up and becoming frustrating
- Performance feeling worse than when everything was new.
If you’re seeing similar signs, your system may be suffering from:
- Old routing data
- Stale HomeKit configurations
- Legacy Matter entries
- Conflicting hubs
- Devices holding onto old pairing keys
- Network fragmentation
What I Did (Before & During the Reset)
To eliminate any underlying configuration issues, I began by removing every element of my smart home setup across every platform, everything from the router/modem to the smallest sensor.
Here’s what I removed:
- Every device from Apple Home (individually)
- Removed my partner from the Home
- Deleted the Home itself
- In iOS: Settings → General → Matter. I deleted every device listed
- Turned Home data OFF in iCloud for both me and my partner
- Deleted all Aqara devices, routines & scenes inside the Aqara App (back to a “just registered” state)
- Did the same inside Amazon Alexa (If you have other ecosystems such as Google, Smart Things, Home Assistant or any others, delete everything here too)
- Factory reset all routers, including the ISP router
- As I worked, I also factory reset every single smart device (Sensors, cameras, buttons, thermostats etc)
- Then reset everything again, just to ensure a completely clean slate
This cleared out years of:
- Fragmented pairing data
- Old hub links
- Hidden automations
- Stale network bindings
- Duplicate Matter bridges
Setting Everything Up Again (The Rebuild)
With everything reset and wiped clean, I rebuilt the smart home from the ground up - slowly, carefully, and in a logical order. The idea is to start as though you have just bought everything new that is in a factory default state before you register and set them up.
1. Network Rebuild
- Set up ISP router → enabled Modem Mode (instructions can be found with a quick Google search).
- Set up ASUS ET12 Pro system (this will be your router(s)/Mesh system.
- Dedicated 2.4 GHz band exclusively for smart devices, even if some support 5 GHz (This massively reduces interference and improves stability). Tip: Name this band something like “My IoT Network” for easy identification.
2. Restore Home Platform Accounts
- Turned Home data ON in iCloud again for both of us
- Ensured all devices were signed into the same Apple ID Home (iPhones etc)
3. Add the Main Controllers In this order:
- Two Apple TV 4K (Newest Ethernet models) - these are first because they are my main Apple hubs.
- Five HomePod Mini’s (additional Home hubs & Thread nodes)
- Aqara Hub M3 (central Zigbee/Thread/Matter hub) - the Aqara main brain.
- Eve Energy UK plugs (Matter-over-Thread/Thread Border Router devices) - for a stronger Thread Network.
At this stage, all core controllers were online, stable, and communicating cleanly.
4. Add Lighting Systems. I installed all lighting devices next:
- Aqara light switches
- Aqara T1M ceiling lights
- Aqara T2 Bulbs & T1 Light Strips
5. Add Critical Devices (anything concerning security and safety)
- Aqara U200 smart lock
- Aqara U200 Lite
- Water Leak Sensors
- Smoke Detectors
6. Add Cameras A balanced mixture of:
- G5
- E1
- G3
- G2H Pro
- Two G4 doorbells
7. Add Everything Else. Once the “core” was stable, I added the rest:
- Blind controllers
- Buttons
- Aqara FP2 sensors
- Motion sensors
- FP3 sensors
- C1 Pet Feeder
- Any remaining accessories
By adding devices in a structured order, network load scaled properly and all hubs formed clean, fresh routing tables.
The Results
By making sure that I added every single device first in the Aqara app in the following way I could ensure the best possible experience:
- Add device to the Aqara app
- Make sure the name makes sense and sensors are placed in the correct room
- From the Aqara app, add that device to the Apple Home app
- Make sure the device is in the same named room and has exactly the same mane in the Apple Home app as it appears in the Aqara app.
- Only then, add the next device.
The difference was immediate and dramatic. That night, I sat for ages just asking Siri to do things just to marvel at how quick it was.
Before:
- Slow automations
- Unresponsive devices
- Delayed lighting
- Cameras lagging
- Poor performance over time
After the Reset:
- Lights respond instantly
- Lock commands happen immediately
- SONOS audio quality improved (yes - they got the reset & a network rebuild even improved my speakers)
- Automations now run smoothly & consistently
- Notifications arrive instantly
- No more random issues
- No slowdowns after several months, stability returned and everything felt new again.
Final Thoughts
The “Great Smart Home Reset” was absolutely worth the time and effortful me. For anyone struggling with performance issues, unresponsive devices, or a messy ecosystem, I genuinely recommend considering a proper clean rebuild.
It might just turn your frustrating setup into the dream smart home you always wanted - just as it did for me.
