Smart Home Setup Journey: Integrating Devices and OpenHab

Hello everyone! I’m thrilled to share my journey of setting up a smart home system. After years of using basic smart devices, I’ve decided to dive deeper into automation with OpenHab. Here’s where I am so far:

Current Setup

  • Devices: I’ve got a mix of Telldus switches, a HeatIt bathroom thermostat, and Philips Hue lights. The thermostat was a must-have after my old one gave up the ghost.
  • Hardware: I’m using a Synology DiskStation, which surprisingly runs OpenHab smoothly. My USB Z-Wave adapter is up and running, and OpenHab has recognized both the thermostat and Hue lights. The Tellstick Net v1, however, is giving me some trouble—it doesn’t seem to work without relying on cloud services, which I’d rather avoid.

Challenges and Goals

  1. Tellstick Integration: I’m hoping to find a workaround for the Tellstick without involving cloud services. It controls several wall switches and sockets, and I’d love to keep everything local.
  2. Thermostat Automation: I want the thermostat to lower the temperature during the day when I’m out and heat up when I return. Adding a temporary boost after a shower would be a nice touch.
  3. Lighting Adjustments: I’m looking for a way to dim the bathroom lights at night, reducing blue light to help with sleep. Replacing the current fluorescent tube with something smarter is on my list.
  4. Garage Security: I accidentally triggered the garage door a few times, so I need a reliable door sensor and a remote close function. WiFi isn’t always reliable here, so I’m leaning towards 433MHz.
  5. Calendar Integration: I’d love to set days as “not home” for energy savings and have the system simulate occupancy by turning lights on and off randomly. Timers alone just don’t cut it.
  6. Future Plans: Long-term, I’m eyeing my air-source heat pump and an indoor garden. The possibilities are endless!

Questions and Tips

  • Does anyone have experience with the Tellstick Net v1 and OpenHab without cloud services? Any workarounds would be appreciated!
  • For the bathroom lights, I’m considering LED strips or smart bulbs that can be dimmed and adjusted in color temperature. Any recommendations?
  • Garage automation on 433MHz—has anyone successfully implemented this without relying on WiFi?

I’m really excited to see how this all comes together. If anyone has tips or solutions, I’d be grateful to hear them! Let’s make this smart home setup as seamless and efficient as possible. :rocket:
