Hey everyone, I’m diving into the world of smart home automation and wanted to share some of my experiences and questions as I set things up in my new home. ![]()

I’ve been working on creating a system where the lights turn on and off randomly to give the impression that someone is home, even when I’m away. I’ve managed to get the basic scenes working, but I’m curious if there’s a way to make it more dynamic. For example, can I set it up so that the lights turn on at random times after sunset and then turn off at sunrise? I’ve tried a few cron triggers, but I’m not sure if I’m using them correctly. Any tips or tricks would be amazing! ![]()
Another thing I’m exploring is integrating my Z-Wave dimmers with Homebridge. They show up as simple on/off switches in HomeKit, but I’d love to have full dimming functionality. Does anyone know if there’s a specific setting or workaround to enable this? I’ve included the devices and everything seems to communicate fine, but the dimming feature just doesn’t show up. ![]()
On a lighter note, I stumbled upon a funny situation while setting up my security system. I had a huge order of smart home gadgets in my cart, and for a moment, it showed $0.00! I almost went through with it, but decided it wasn’t honest. It made me laugh, though—imagine getting all those gadgets for free! ![]()
I’d also love to hear about others’ experiences with randomizing their smart home scenes. Have you found any particular apps or settings that make it easier? And for those using OpenHAB, how do you handle the debugging process when things don’t work as expected? I’m still getting the hang of it, but it’s been a fascinating journey so far. ![]()
