I’ve been really enjoying setting up my smart home with various devices, and one of my favorite automations has been linking my Ring Video Doorbell 2 with my smart lighting. It’s such a convenience to have the lights turn on automatically when someone presses the doorbell, especially after sunset. However, I recently encountered an issue while trying to modify this automation. Let me share my experience and maybe get some advice from the community.
Initially, the setup was straightforward. I used SmartThings to create an automation where pressing the doorbell button would trigger a light switch. Everything worked perfectly for a while. But when I decided to add another light to the automation, I ran into some trouble. The interface gave me an error message: “We’re having trouble connecting. Check your network connection and try again.” I was confused because my network seemed fine, and the devices were all connected.
I tried deleting the automation and recreating it, but the same issue occurred. This time, when I selected the Ring doorbell button as the trigger, the screen just showed “Lighting Automation” at the top and “Next” at the bottom. There was no option to add additional conditions or actions. It was frustrating because I couldn’t figure out what was wrong or how to fix it.
After some research, I found that others were experiencing similar issues with integrating Ring devices in SmartThings. It seems like there might have been some temporary glitches on their end. I’m hoping they’ll resolve this soon because I really want to expand my automation setup.
In the meantime, I’ve been exploring other ways to achieve the same result. I’ve heard great things about using third-party apps like IFTTT or Hubitat to create more complex automations. Maybe I’ll give one of those a try if I can’t get this working through SmartThings. Either way, I’m determined to find a solution because having my lights automatically turn on when the doorbell rings is such a handy feature!
