Smart Lighting Automation: Motion Detection and Nightlight Setup

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my experience setting up a smart lighting automation using Wyze Sense motion detectors. I’ve been experimenting with smart lighting for a while now, and I must say, it’s been a fantastic journey!

I have a Wyze Sense setup in my mudroom, and I wanted to create a system where the lights turn on when motion is detected and then dim to 25% brightness after a minute of no motion. This would essentially serve as a nightlight, providing just enough light without being too intrusive.

Initially, I faced a bit of a challenge. The lights would turn on when motion was detected, but instead of dimming to 25%, they would completely turn off after the motion stopped. That wasn’t exactly what I wanted. I wanted the lights to stay on at a lower brightness level, acting as a nightlight.

After some research and trial and error, I figured out how to adjust the automation settings. I realized that I needed to modify the trigger conditions and the actions associated with them. Instead of just turning the lights off after motion stops, I set it up so that after a minute of no motion, the lights dim to 25%.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Motion Detection Trigger: I set up the Wyze Sense motion detector to trigger when motion is detected. This immediately turns the lights on at full brightness.

  2. Dimming After Inactivity: I added a delay action that waits for one minute after the last motion detection. If no further motion is detected within that minute, the lights dim to 25%.

  3. Nightlight Schedule: I also incorporated a schedule so that this automation only activates between 8 PM and 7 AM. This ensures that the nightlight feature is only active during the evening and early morning hours.

This setup has been working perfectly for me! The lights now provide a welcoming glow when I enter the mudroom, and they gently dim to a lower brightness, saving energy without compromising safety.

I’d love to hear how others have set up their motion detection and nightlight systems. Have you found any particular settings or devices that work exceptionally well? Let’s share our experiences and tips!

Happy automating! :rocket:
