Hey everyone! I’ve been working on setting up a smart lighting system in my home, and I wanted to share my experience and a few tips that might help others with similar projects.
My goal was to create a system where the lights automatically turn on when motion is detected, stay on for about a minute, and adjust their brightness based on whether the house is in ‘Away’ mode or not. This setup is particularly useful for security and energy efficiency.
Here’s how I approached it:
-
Motion Detection: I installed motion sensors in key areas like hallways and living rooms. These sensors detect movement and trigger the lights.
-
Brightness Adjustment: I configured the lights to have different brightness settings. During the day, they stay off unless motion is detected. In the evening, they dim to 30% brightness, and at night, they go up to 50%.
-
Away Mode Integration: When the house is in ‘Away’ mode, the lights stay on at 95% brightness to deter potential intruders. This mode is automatically activated when I leave the house.
-
Timing Constraints: The automation only works between 4:00 PM and 7:00 AM to avoid unnecessary lighting during daylight hours.
Setting this up was a bit of a learning curve, especially figuring out how to integrate the motion sensors with the lighting system and programming the different scenarios. However, the end result has been fantastic! The lights now respond seamlessly to my movements and provide a reassuring presence when I’m away.
If anyone has questions or suggestions on improving this setup, I’d love to hear them! Happy automating! ![]()
