Recently, I embarked on a project to automate my home lighting using SmartThings motion sensors and Innr dimmable bulbs. The goal was to create a seamless experience where lights adjust based on motion and time of day. Here’s how I made it work!
The Setup
I installed two Innr dimmable bulbs in the hallway and one on the first-floor landing. These were paired with SmartThings motion sensors to cover the areas effectively. The challenge was to have the lights turn on at 80% brightness when motion is detected between sunset and 11 PM, then reduce to 5% for a gentle night light until sunrise.
The Process
- Motion Detection: The SmartThings motion sensors were set to trigger the lights upon detecting movement.
- Brightness Adjustment: Using Smart Lighting automations, I configured the lights to switch to 5% brightness after 11 PM.
- Timing: Sunset and sunrise times were automatically detected to ensure the system adapts to seasonal changes.
Challenges and Solutions
Initially, the lights stayed at 80% brightness during the night. After some research, I realized the issue was with overlapping automations. By adjusting the timing and ensuring each automation had a clear trigger, the system worked as intended.
The Result
Now, the lights provide a welcoming glow during the day and a subtle night light when needed. It’s amazing how this simple setup enhances comfort and safety!
Tips for Others
- Test Each Component: Ensure motion sensors and bulbs are working individually before setting up automations.
- Use Time-Based Triggers: Leverage sunset and sunrise times for energy efficiency and convenience.
- Adjust Gradually: Test brightness levels to find the perfect balance between functionality and ambiance.
This project has been a fantastic way to integrate technology into daily life. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about creating a home that feels truly smart and personalized. Happy automating! ![]()
