Smart Lighting Automation Success Story: RGB Strip Color Zones

After months of research and setup, I’m thrilled to share my successful implementation of color zone automation for my RGB LED strips! :tada:

The Goal:
I wanted to create a dynamic lighting system where different sections of my LED strip could be programmed to display unique colors simultaneously. This would allow me to set different moods in various areas of my living space without manually adjusting each section.

The Challenge:
Initially, I was only able to change the entire strip to a single color using the Tuya app. While this worked for basic lighting needs, it didn’t scratch the itch for more creative control. I knew there had to be a way to achieve the multi-color zoning functionality I saw in the LSC app, but integrating it with my Homey ecosystem was the puzzle I needed to solve.

The Solution:
After some digging in the Homey community forums, I discovered that while Homey doesn’t natively support multi-color zones, there’s a clever workaround using IFTTT integrations and custom scenes. Here’s what I did:

  1. Setup Zones:

    • Divided my LED strip into logical zones using physical markers.
    • Assigned each zone a unique identifier in the Tuya app.
  2. IFTTT Automation:

    • Created individual IFTTT applets for each zone.
    • Mapped specific triggers (like time of day or motion detection) to color changes for each zone.
  3. Custom Scenes:

    • Built scenes in Homey that combine multiple zones into cohesive lighting presets.
    • For example, a “Dinner Mode” scene dims the main zone while keeping the accent zone at full brightness.

The Results:
This setup has completely transformed my living space! Now, I can:

  • Automatically cycle through color schemes during the day.
  • Create ambiance for different occasions with just a voice command.
  • Independently control each zone for maximum flexibility.

Tips for Others:

  • Start small. Test one zone before scaling up.
  • Use physical markers to ensure accurate zone divisions.
  • Don’t hesitate to reach out to the community for advice—this project wouldn’t have been possible without the collective wisdom of fellow Homey enthusiasts!

I’m so excited to continue expanding this system and exploring new ways to integrate it with my other smart home devices. If anyone has questions or wants to share their own automation projects, I’d love to hear from you! :rocket:
