Smart Lighting Automation with Motion Detection and Timer

Hey everyone, I’m really excited to share my recent project with you! I’ve been working on setting up a smart lighting system in my home, and I wanted to combine motion detection with a timer for a seamless experience. Here’s what I did and how it worked out.First, I decided to use a combination of motion sensors and smart bulbs. I chose the Wyze Cam V2 for motion detection because it’s reliable and integrates well with my existing setup. For the lighting, I went with the Philips Hue system—it’s known for its color accuracy and smooth dimming. The main goal was to have the lights turn on automatically when motion is detected, but also ensure they turn off after a certain period of inactivity. I set up the motion sensor to trigger the lights, and then used a timer automation to turn them off after 15 minutes. This way, I don’t have to worry about leaving the lights on, and it saves energy too.I also added a manual override feature. If I’m in the room and don’t want the lights to turn off, I can press a button on my phone app, which resets the timer. It’s been a lifesaver for those late-night movie sessions! One thing I struggled with initially was getting the timer to work consistently. I tried a few different approaches, including using IFTTT and directly programming the automation in Home Assistant. In the end, setting it up through Home Assistant was the most reliable solution.Another cool feature I added was color changing based on the time of day. During the day, the lights stay neutral, but in the evening, they shift to a warmer tone to create a cozy atmosphere. It’s a small touch, but it makes a big difference in how the space feels.I also wanted to share a tip for anyone setting up similar automations: start simple and test each component individually before combining them. It makes troubleshooting much easier and helps you understand how each part works together.Overall, I’m really happy with how this project turned out. It’s made my home more convenient and energy-efficient, and I love the flexibility it offers. If you’re thinking about setting up something similar, I highly recommend giving it a try!If anyone has questions or suggestions, feel free to reach out. I’d love to hear how others are automating their lighting systems too!
