Smart Lighting Setup and Motion Sensing Integration

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my recent experience setting up a smart lighting system in my home. It’s been a fun and slightly challenging project, but I’m really happy with the results so far. I thought I’d walk through my setup and maybe get some tips or feedback from the community.First, I’ve been using Lutron Caseta switches for all my lighting control. They’ve been incredibly reliable and have a high WAF (Wife Approval Factor), which is a huge plus. However, I wanted to add some automation to make things even more convenient, especially for the outdoor lights. I’ve got a set of Hue Impress lights installed outside, and I wanted them to turn on automatically when motion is detected.I decided to use two outdoor motion sensors placed at the top and bottom of my stairs. The idea was to have the lights turn on at 100% brightness when motion is detected and then dim back to 25% after a minute. This way, the lights provide enough illumination for safety but aren’t too bright once the motion has stopped. Here’s where things got a bit tricky. Initially, I set up an automation where the first sensor (Sensor 1) would turn the lights on to 100%, and after a minute, it would dim back to 25%. But when the second sensor (Sensor 2) detected motion at the bottom of the stairs, it would reset the automation and keep the lights at 100%. This wasn’t the behavior I wanted. After some research and trial and error, I realized I needed to adjust the automation logic. Instead of each sensor independently controlling the lights, I needed a way for them to communicate and ensure the lights dim back to 25% after motion stops, regardless of which sensor triggered them. I found that using a scene with a delay timer helped solve this issue. Now, both sensors trigger the same scene, and the lights dim back to 25% after a minute of inactivity. This setup has worked perfectly, and I’m really happy with how it’s improved my outdoor lighting automation. I’d love to hear if anyone has other creative ways to handle multiple motion sensors or suggestions for further improvements.Another thing I’ve been experimenting with is integrating my smart lights with voice control. I’ve been using Google Home for this, and it’s been a breeze to set up. I just paired my Lutron Caseta switches with the Google Home app, and now I can turn lights on and off, adjust brightness, and even create scenes using voice commands. It’s added a whole new level of convenience to my smart home setup.I also wanted to mention the importance of choosing the right motion sensors. I’ve been using the SmartThings PIR sensors, and they’ve been reliable and sensitive enough to detect motion without being too intrusive. They’re also weatherproof, which is essential for outdoor use.Overall, this project has been a great learning experience, and I’m excited to continue exploring more ways to automate and enhance my home. If anyone has questions or suggestions about setting up similar systems, feel free to reach out! I’d be happy to share more details or help troubleshoot any issues.
