Smart switches too bulky. Suggestion for Aqara

One thing I really want to do is swap out my wall switches to wired smart switches. My problem is I live in a home built in 1960. The electrical boxes are all too shallow and narrow to fit smart switches. I don’t want to use remotes. That is how I have things set up now and I want to get away from so may remotes. I have been able to change out 2 switches in a 3-gang box, because the third switch that was in it didn’t work. It was supposed to control my lamp post light, but it never worked so I removed the lamp post and switch. That was gave me a little more room to add the 2 smart switches.

I also don’t want to have to pay an electrician to swap out the boxes. That would get too pricey.

I wish Aqara would make some “small box” switches. I know it takes up room to have the smarts of it, but there are some brands that have a smaller or not as deep form factor. Zooz is one, but I would rather have Zigbee or Matter. Zooz only has Z-Wave in those versions so far.

Hi Netwitz, thank you for your interest in our product. Currently, the base of our Light Switch H2 US is indeed a bit thicker. We generally recommend two solutions: one is to replace your wall box with one that has a depth of at least 50mm, or you could try shortening the wires a bit when connecting them, which might save some space. Alternatively, you can consider our first-generation product, the Smart Light Switch, which is slightly thinner. Making our products slimmer is definitely a direction we are working hard toward in the future.

I’m in the UK, but this is an issue I’ve been working on lately - tinkering with an ESP32C6 board and rotary encoder that I could install behind a standard rotary switch plate. I currently have a number of the Hue in-wall switch modules connected to some retractive switches, but it’s a pain to hold down the switch and wait for the light either to dim or brighten. The H1 Smart Rotary Knob was great (in that it was wireless), but it doesn’t match with our decor - if Aqara made something similar, but sat behind a switch plate, so that users could choose finishes that work seemlessly with their own home design, I think this would be very well-received. Until then, I’ll still be tinkering in VS Code until I get my setup just right. Just my two cents.
