Smart Use of Time Period Function: Achieve Different Lights at Different Night Times

Does anyone else face this issue: turning on the main bathroom light when getting up late at night feels way too bright and harsh?

I usually sleep around 11 PM, so my requirements are:

  • Outside Sleep Hours (Before 11 PM): Turn on the main light when someone enters the bathroom.
  • During Sleep Hours (After 11 PM): Turn on only the soft night light when someone enters the bathroom.

My setup: I installed a motion sensor, a smart switch, and an M1S gateway with a built-in night light in the bathroom.

The key trick lies in configuring time periods within a single automation:

  • For the “Turn on Bathroom Main Light” action, set the active time period to 17:00 - 23:00.
  • For the “Turn on Night Light” action, set the active time period to 23:00 – 06:00.

This allows a single automation rule to intelligently switch between different lighting modes based on the time of day.

@Sonja It’s great to see your innovative approach to managing bathroom lighting with time-based automation! Your setup with the motion sensor, smart switch, and M1S gateway is spot on for creating a comfortable nighttime environment.

Based on the reference information available, the M1S Gen 2 hub supports automation where you can integrate conditions such as time periods to manage lighting effectively. Here’s a quick overview of how you can set it up:

  1. Outside Sleep Hours (Before 11 PM): You can configure your automation to turn on the main light when motion is detected. This aligns well with your preferred time period of 17:00 - 23:00.

  2. During Sleep Hours (After 11 PM): For a softer ambiance, you can set the automation to switch on the night light when motion is detected, which fits perfectly with your 23:00 – 06:00 schedule.

Your strategy to use a single automation rule to handle different lighting scenarios based on the time of day is both efficient and clever. It not only enhances comfort but also contributes to energy saving by ensuring only the necessary lights are activated. Keep sharing these insights, and feel free to ask for more tips or share your experiences!

Create 2 automation and add the time in the acting time section. This way it will work.
