SmartThings Hub Offline Notifications: A Frustrating Issue

I’ve been using the SmartThings app for a while now, and I’ve really come to appreciate its security features. I’ve set up the Smart Home Monitor (SHM) notifications to act as a makeshift security system, and I rely on the app to notify me of any intrusions. However, I’ve run into a bit of a snag with the hub offline/online notifications. These notifications are designed to alert me when my hub goes offline or comes back online, but they’re proving to be more of a nuisance than a help.

The issue started when I noticed that the hub offline notifications were waking me up in the middle of the night. I had set up the app to ring through only during nighttime hours, intending to be alerted in case of a security breach. But instead of being woken up by a potential intruder, I was being roused by my hub reconnecting after a brief offline period. This was understandably frustrating, as it defeated the purpose of having the notifications in the first place.

In an attempt to solve the problem, I disabled the ring-through feature for these notifications. However, this had the unintended consequence of also disabling the security notifications I so desperately wanted. It’s a bit of a Catch-22 situation: I either get woken up by the hub notifications or lose the security alerts altogether.

I’ve reached out to the SmartThings support team, and they’ve been helpful so far. They mentioned that while there’s no direct way to disable these specific notifications within the app, there might be a workaround. They suggested adjusting the notification settings to filter out the hub-related alerts. I’m still experimenting with this approach, but I’m hopeful it will resolve the issue.

In the meantime, I’ve started to explore alternative solutions. I’ve come across some third-party apps that promise more granular control over notifications, but I’m hesitant to introduce another layer of complexity into my setup. I’d prefer to stick with the SmartThings app if possible, as it’s already integrated seamlessly with my other devices.

This experience has been a bit of a learning curve for me. I’ve realized just how important it is to have fine-grained control over notifications, especially when they’re tied to security systems. I can only hope that future updates to the SmartThings app will include the ability to individually manage these types of alerts. Until then, I’ll continue to tweak my settings and hope for the best.

If anyone else has encountered this issue or has any suggestions, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s keep the conversation going and see if we can find a solution that works for everyone!
