Solving the Wyze Thermostat Dual Heat Source Puzzle

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience with the Wyze thermostat and its integration with Quebec’s bi-energy system. For those unfamiliar, Quebec offers a unique setup where electric heat pumps are automatically switched off at -20°C, redirecting to gas furnaces. I was curious if the Wyze thermostat could handle this seamlessly, especially with its emergency and auxiliary heating modes.

Initially, I was a bit puzzled. The emergency heating mode seemed too basic, and I wasn’t sure how it would interact with the gas furnace activation. Would it disable temperature control inside? What about the AUX mode? Would it shut down the heat pump as intended? These questions kept me up at night!

After some research and testing, I found that the Wyze thermostat does support this setup, but it requires a bit of tweaking. By configuring the thermostat to switch to AUX mode when the temperature drops below -20°C, the heat pump shuts off, and the gas furnace kicks in without any issues. The thermostat still allows for some temperature control, though it’s limited compared to the heat pump’s precision.

I’m really happy with how this turned out. It’s been running smoothly for a few weeks now, and I no longer worry about the transition between heating sources. A huge thank you to the community for the insights and tips that helped me navigate this setup! If anyone else is tackling a similar project, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to share more details!
