Solving Z-Wave Compatibility Issues with Honeywell Thermostat

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with integrating a Honeywell Z-Wave thermostat with my SmartThings Hub. Initially, everything worked perfectly when the thermostat was installed independently—both heating and cooling functions, as well as fan control, operated smoothly. However, upon connecting it to the SmartThings Hub via Z-Wave, I noticed a significant issue: the cooling function stopped working. Instead of engaging the cooling mode, the thermostat would display ‘wait’ when I requested it to cool. The heating function, on the other hand, continued to work without any issues. Interestingly, when I disabled the Z-Wave integration on the thermostat, the cooling function resumed working as expected.

I reached out to the community to see if anyone else had encountered this problem. After some research and discussions, I discovered that the issue might be related to how the SmartThings Hub handles Z-Wave commands for cooling functions. Some users suggested checking the firmware versions of both the thermostat and the hub, ensuring they are up to date. Others recommended testing the integration with a different Z-Wave controller to isolate whether the problem was specific to the SmartThings Hub.

In my case, updating the firmware on both devices didn’t resolve the issue. However, switching to a different Z-Wave controller as a test revealed that the problem was indeed specific to the SmartThings Hub. After further troubleshooting, I found that selectively disabling certain features on the hub related to Z-Wave command handling allowed the cooling function to work again without affecting the heating functionality.

This experience taught me the importance of thoroughly testing each component and being prepared to troubleshoot compatibility issues, even with devices that are supposed to work seamlessly together. I hope this account helps anyone else facing similar challenges and encourages manufacturers to continue improving device compatibility in the future. Happy smart home tinkering! :rocket:
