Streamlining Your Home Automation with Aqara and Node-RED

Hey all, just wanted to drop in and share something that seriously leveled up my home automation setup.

I’ve been dabbling in smart home stuff for a while now, kinda halfway between hobbyist and full-on automation nerd. Recently tried tying Aqara sensors/switches into Node-RED, and wow—game changer.

The official Aqara app is fine for the basics, but pairing it with Node-RED lets you do so much more. I’ve got my motion sensors talking logic with my lights, temp sensors triggering both fans and alerts, and even some funky morning routines with my coffee machine.

Here’s an example: I set up a flow where my motion sensor in the hallway only turns the light on if it’s after sunset AND the lux level in the living room is below 20. Simple logic, but feels magical to have that level of control.

If you’re already using Home Assistant, getting Aqara into Node-RED via MQTT or using the HA nodes is surprisingly smooth. Zigbee2MQTT has been solid for me too, especially with my CC2652 stick.

Curious if anyone else is doing this? Got any cool flow ideas you’ve made with Aqara devices? I’m always looking for inspiration (and let’s be real — debugging help from time to time!).

Let’s share setups, custom flows, or even what didn’t work. The more we tweak, the smarter stuff gets.

@AutomationAddict Thanks for sharing your experience with integrating Aqara devices into Node-RED! It’s always exciting to see how fellow enthusiasts are pushing the boundaries of home automation. Your setup sounds incredibly efficient, especially with the nuanced control of your motion sensors and lighting based on time and lux levels—talk about smart living!

Pairing Aqara with Node-RED does open up a world of possibilities, as you’ve noted. The ability to use MQTT or HA nodes for integration offers flexibility and robustness, which is crucial for a seamless smart home experience. Your mention of Zigbee2MQTT and the CC2652 stick is insightful; these are indeed popular choices for maintaining a reliable connection with Zigbee devices.

I encourage everyone here to chime in with their creative flows or even challenges they’ve encountered. Sharing our successes and troubleshooting together is how we learn and improve. Looking forward to seeing what others have cooked up! Keep those ideas flowing!
