Struggling to add dimmer to Alexa

Hi, I’m having issues connecting to Alexa and would appreciate some advice…

I have the following:

Smart hub E1
Dimmer H2 EU

I have other devices but they’re all running fine.

I recently bought the dimmer switch and it’s been installed and working fine.

Today I’ve tried to connect it via Alexa. I have other aqara devices (2 X H1’s and the roller shade E1) and they all work fine via Alexa.

I’ve never used Matter, and since I have the hub, I threw away the packaging with the QR code.

Setting up in Alexa, it only offers me Matter. As soon as I click that I don’t have the QR code, it goes no further.

So I added the aqara Alexa skill. It then found a new device, but for some reason, it’s showing up at “simple security system”. And doesn’t respond.

I’m not sure what else to do here… I understand Matter can make things easier, but I have the hub so I shouldn’t need to use Matter?

Anyone have any advice they can give me please?

Tia

@sites Hi there! It sounds like you’re having a bit of a tricky time with your Aqara Dimmer Switch H2 EU and Alexa. Let’s see if we can untangle this together.

Since you’re using the Aqara Hub E1, it’s good to know that this hub supports Matter, which is a protocol designed to enhance device compatibility across different ecosystems. However, you mentioned not having the Matter QR code, which is crucial for setting up Matter-enabled devices directly with Alexa.

Here’s a step-by-step approach that might help:

  1. Aqara Alexa Skill: It’s good that you’ve added the Aqara Alexa skill. This should ideally let your Alexa app discover devices connected to your Aqara Hub without needing the Matter QR code. Ensure that the skill is properly linked to your Aqara account.

  2. Device Discovery: When Alexa discovers your Dimmer Switch as a “simple security system,” it might be a mismatch in device types. Double-check if the dimmer is correctly added in the Aqara Home app and ensure it’s recognized as a light control device.

  3. Matter Protocol: If your setup insists on using Matter, you’ll need that QR code. Since you’ve discarded the packaging, you might try reaching out to Aqara support for assistance. They might provide an alternative solution or a way to retrieve your QR code.

  4. Switch Protocols: While Matter is an option, your hub should also support connecting devices via Zigbee. Ensure that your Dimmer Switch is set to use the correct protocol in the Aqara Home app.

  5. Reset and Retry: Sometimes, resetting the dimmer and re-adding it can resolve these hiccups. Just be sure to follow the Aqara Dimmer Switch reset instructions: within 3 seconds of double-clicking, press and hold the dial for 5 seconds until the indicator light flashes, confirming the reset.

If none of these steps work, it might be worth reaching out to Aqara support for further assistance. They could provide more tailored guidance to resolve this issue. Good luck, and feel free to update us on how it goes!

@sites Hi there! Let’s try to figure out how to get your Dimmer H2 EU connected to Alexa smoothly.

First, since you’re using the Smart Hub E1, you shouldn’t need to use Matter—connecting via the Aqara skill is the way to go. Let’s start with the basics: make sure the dimmer is properly set up and working in the Aqara Home app first. If it’s already functioning there, the next step is to check the Alexa skill connection.

You mentioned adding the Aqara skill and finding a device labeled “simple security system” that doesn’t respond. This might be a misidentification issue. Try relinking the Aqara skill in Alexa: go to “Skills & Games” in the Alexa app, find the Aqara skill, disable it, then re-enable it and log in again with your Aqara account. After that, trigger a device discovery (Alexa should auto-discover, but you can also manually start it in “Devices”). This often refreshes the connection and corrects device labeling .

Also, double-check that the dimmer is listed correctly in the Aqara app under “Profile > Smart Speaker Service > Amazon Alexa” to ensure it’s enabled for Alexa integration. If the issue persists, verifying that both the Aqara app and Alexa app are updated to the latest versions might help too.

Hope this works—let us know how it goes! If you still run into trouble, feel free to share more details, and the community can help troubleshoot further.

Tia!

@sites Hi there! Let’s try to troubleshoot this step by step.

First, regarding connecting the Dimmer Switch H2 EU to Alexa with your E1 Hub: The device supports both Thread and Zigbee protocols, and Zigbee mode requires a hub (like your E1). When adding it to the Aqara Home app for the first time, you should be able to choose the protocol—select Zigbee if you want to use it with the hub instead of Matter .

Since you don’t have the QR code anymore, you can find the setup code or relevant details in the user manual (you can access it here: Dimmer Switch H2 EU User Manual) .

For the Alexa issue: If the device is showing up as “simple security system” via the Aqara skill, it might be a recognition glitch. Try removing the device from the Aqara app, resetting it (double press, then hold for 5 seconds within 3 seconds of the initial press to reset ), and re-adding it to the Aqara Home app using Zigbee mode first. Then, relink the Aqara Alexa skill to see if it correctly identifies the dimmer.

If Alexa still only offers Matter setup, ensure your Aqara Home app is up to date and the hub is properly connected. Since the reference info doesn’t cover Alexa skill-specific recognition issues, this is a general troubleshooting approach—hope it helps!

If you still run into problems, feel free to share more details, and the community might have additional tips.

P.S. If you need further assistance, you can contact the Customer Service Team via the Aqara Home App (Profile>Help&Feedback>Customer Service) for more tailored support. To address your issue with connecting the Aqara Dimmer Switch H2 EU to Alexa, let’s break down the steps based on available information:

1. Protocol Selection: Zigbee vs. Matter

The Dimmer Switch H2 EU supports both Thread and Zigbee protocols. Since you have an E1 Hub, you can use Zigbee mode (which requires a hub), avoiding Matter setup. When adding the device to the Aqara Home app for the first time, you should see an option to select the protocol—choose Zigbee .

2. Resetting the Device (if needed)

If the device is stuck in Matter mode, reset it to re-enter network configuration:

  • Double-press the button, then hold for 5 seconds within 3 seconds of the initial press. This resets the device and enables network connection .

3. Adding to Aqara Home App First

Since you no longer have the QR code, use the setup code from the user manual (available here) . Add the device to the Aqara Home app via Zigbee mode, ensuring it connects to your E1 Hub.

4. Alexa Skill Recognition Issue

If the device appears as “simple security system” in Alexa:

  • Remove the Aqara Alexa skill, then re-link it.
  • Ensure the device is correctly labeled in the Aqara Home app before syncing with Alexa.

Note

The reference information does not explicitly cover Alexa skill recognition errors, so these steps are based on general protocol and setup guidance. If issues persist, consider contacting Aqara Customer Service for further assistance.
