Successful Automation Setup: Candy Dispenser with SmartThings and Google Nest

I’m thrilled to share my recent success in setting up a Halloween candy dispenser using SmartThings and Google Nest! :jack_o_lantern::sparkles:

The idea was to automate the candy distribution for trick-or-treaters, ensuring it dispenses just the right amount without overloading. I integrated an eWeLink Outlet with SmartThings to control the dispenser. The automation is simple: press a button, the outlet turns on, dispenses candy, and then automatically turns off.

However, there was a hiccup with the Auto Turn Off feature. Initially, it wasn’t reliable—sometimes the outlet wouldn’t turn off, or there was a significant delay. This was a bit frustrating because leaving the dispenser on too long could lead to an unintended candy jackpot! After some troubleshooting, I realized adjusting the timing settings and ensuring line-of-sight with the hub made a huge difference. Now, it works like clockwork!

Here’s what I learned:

  1. Timing is Everything: I set the Auto Turn Off delay to 1 second for immediate shut-off, but it’s important to test and adjust based on your device’s response time.
  2. Device Placement Matters: Ensure your eWeLink Outlet is within direct line of sight of your SmartThings hub to avoid communication issues.
  3. Monitor Logs: If you encounter delays or missed commands, check the SmartThings logs for any errors or patterns.

This project has been a fun way to combine technology with holiday cheer. It’s amazing how a bit of automation can make everyday tasks (or in this case, seasonal treats) so much smoother!

If anyone has similar automation ideas or questions, I’d love to hear about them. Happy automating! :rocket:
