Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent success in automating the bathroom mirror lighting using motion sensors. I have two Rak bathroom mirrors, both with built-in lighting and heating. While they’re great on their own, I wanted to add a bit of smart home magic to them.
The main goals were twofold: first, to prevent the bright button lights from shining at night, which can be quite annoying. Second, I wanted to address the issue of the heaters being left on unintentionally throughout the day.
After some research, I decided on a setup involving a motion sensor and an inline power switch. The idea was to have the lights and heaters turn on when motion is detected and then automatically turn off after a set period of inactivity. This way, I save energy and avoid those pesky bright lights at night.
For the motion sensor, I went with the Wyze Motion Sensor due to its reliability and integration with my existing smart home ecosystem. The inline power switch was a bit trickier, but I found a compatible model that works seamlessly with UK mains voltage (230/240V).
Setting up the automation was a breeze using my home automation system. I configured the motion sensor to trigger the power switch, which in turn controls the bathroom mirrors. To prevent the lights from staying on indefinitely, I added a delay of 15 minutes before turning off. This gives me ample time to use the bathroom without the lights cutting out too soon.
The results have been fantastic! No more bright lights shining through at night, and I’ve noticed a significant reduction in energy waste from the heaters being left on. Plus, it’s just so convenient not having to manually turn the lights on every time I enter the bathroom.
If anyone is looking to do something similar, I’d highly recommend this setup. It’s cost-effective, easy to install, and provides a noticeable improvement in daily convenience. Happy automating! ![]()
