Successfully Configuring Aeotec Nano Shutter as a Rollershutter

Hi everyone! I wanted to share my experience with configuring the Aeotec Nano Shutter as a rollershutter in OpenHAB. At first, I was a bit confused because the documentation mixed terms like ‘Shutter’ and ‘Dimmer,’ and there wasn’t a clear ‘Shutter Channel’ available. However, after some research and experimentation, I managed to get it working smoothly. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Understanding the Device: The Aeotec Nano Shutter is a versatile device that can control both switches and dimmers. Since I wanted to use it for a rollershutter, I needed to ensure that the OpenHAB configuration recognized it as such.

  2. Configuration Process: I started by checking the device bindings in OpenHAB. Initially, it only showed a ‘Dimmer’ channel, which wasn’t what I needed. After some digging, I found that I could manually configure the device to recognize the rollershutter functionality.

  3. Defining the Item: I created an item in my items.cfg file, specifying it as a Rollershutter type. This was crucial because it allowed OpenHAB to interpret the device correctly.

  4. Testing and Fine-Tuning: Once the configuration was set, I tested the rollershutter functionality. It worked perfectly! The device now responds to both manual and automated commands, making it a seamless addition to my smart home setup.

  5. Tips for Others: If you’re facing similar issues, I recommend checking the device’s configuration in the OpenHAB Paper UI and ensuring that all channels are correctly defined.
