Successfully Connecting an Older Samsung Fridge to SmartThings: My Experience

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience connecting an older Samsung refrigerator (RS22HDHPNSR, 2014 model) to the SmartThings app on my iPhone 12. I thought it might be a breeze, but it turned out to be a bit of a puzzle! :jigsaw:

The Challenge:
I moved into a place that already had this fridge, and I was excited to integrate it into my smart home setup. The original manual mentioned a different app, which wasn’t available on my iPhone. I followed the instructions from Samsung’s support page, but the “DIRECT-SMARTREF” WiFi connection didn’t work as expected. I kept getting a 04-100 error, and the troubleshooting steps didn’t resolve the issue. Ugh, frustrating! :weary:

The Solution:
After some research and trial and error, I found a workaround. Here’s what I did:

  1. Ensure the Right App: Make sure you’re using the latest version of the SmartThings app. Older versions might not support all devices.
  2. Manual Setup: Instead of relying on the direct connection method, I manually added the refrigerator in the SmartThings app under ‘Add Device’ > ‘By Device Type’ > ‘Refrigerator’ > ‘Samsung’.
  3. Follow the Steps Carefully: I opened the fridge door, pressed the Door Alarm button to unlock the temperature controls, and then pressed the Fridge button until ‘AP’ appeared. This put the fridge into pairing mode.
  4. Connect via WiFi: Once the fridge appeared in the app, I selected my WiFi network and entered the password. It connected without any issues this time!

The Outcome:
Now, I can control the fridge’s temperature settings remotely, and it’s integrated seamlessly into my smart home ecosystem. It’s amazing how this old fridge now works like a smart device!

Tips for Others:

  • If you’re having trouble with older models, try manual setup instead of direct connection.
